Citizens should not congregate in parks and other public spaces in response to COVID-19
With warmer weather in the forecast this weekend, the City of Vaughan is reminding citizens that all park amenities – including playgrounds, sports fields, tennis and basketball courts, dog parks and benches – remain closed until further notice in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Congregating in parks and other public spaces while physical distancing measures are in effect is not permitted. Individuals walking through parks and open trails must stay two metres away from others.
The City’s recently adopted Emergency Measures By-law provides the By-law and Compliance, Licensing and Permit Services team with authority to further enforce social and physical distancing measures in addition to other orders during this state of emergency, such as limiting access to public property. Failure to comply with the by-law is an offence and subject to fines ranging from $500 to $100,000.
Through Operation Guardian – an enforcement campaign to pursue charges for violations of by-laws and provincial orders – more than 2,600 investigations have been carried out since it launched on April 10. All available officers have been deployed to focus on issues such as waste, litter and adherence to provincial physical distancing regulations as well as all City by-laws. Vaughan Animal Services reminds citizens that free-roaming pets are vulnerable to a multitude of dangers. Almost all conflicts between wildlife and domestic dogs occur when dogs are off-leash. In accordance with the City’s Park’s and Animal Control By-laws, always keep dogs on a leash when outdoors and keep cats indoors or in a secure outdoor enclosure. This is a chargeable offense. Off-leash dog owners will be subject to a fine between $105 to $400.
The City is offering many online resources, programs and activities for people to enjoy from the comfort – and safety – of home. These include:
