City marks national day to recognize the essential and invaluable role of water

Did you know that as you live, walk and travel through Vaughan, there are more than 1,000 kilometres of watermains, nearly 1,000 kilometres of sanitary sewers and over 800 kilometres of storm sewers moving water below you? Every year, 35-billion litres of fresh clean water is delivered to homes and businesses across the city – that is equivalent to 14,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools!

Now imagine that when you turned on your faucet, nothing came out. Today, the City of Vaughan is marking Imagine a Day Without Water (IADWW) – a time to consider how essential and invaluable clean, safe drinking water is for the community.

Water systems, pipes, sewers and treatment facilities are often out of sight and out of mind. Created by the Value of Water Coalition, IADWW is a nationwide day of education and advocacy about the value of water  to help ensure this important topic stays top of mind for everyone. Water is essential to our daily lives and the nation's economy. Economic sectors including agriculture, hospitality, food and beverage service, manufacturing and essential services such as hospitals and firefighters need water to do their jobs.

The City maintains a network of fire hydrants, stormwater ponds, water stations, sanitary sewers, catch basins and storm sewers – delivering safe drinking water, collecting wastewater and managing stormwater are vital to managing city building and future growth.

The City of Vaughan is committed to delivering Service Excellence, as outlined in the Council-approved 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan. Through participation in IADWW, the City demonstrates its commitment to City Building, Environmental Stewardship and improving the Citizen Experience. These strategic priorities focus on investing in infrastructure, fostering a sustainable future and ensuring exceptional citizen-centered services to enhance the quality of life in Vaughan.

Starting on Monday, Oct. 26, the City will be sharing fun facts about water to educate the community about the vital role water plays in our everyday lives. Follow along on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. For more information on the City’s water services, visit vaughan.ca/water.
