The Civic Hero Award for Ward 1 was presented to Norma Curtis by Vaughan Council on Jan. 28. Ms. Curtis was recognized for more than 25 years of volunteerism, leadership and advocacy in the Kleinburg area.
“We are very fortunate to live in a City where so many people exemplify the true meaning of generosity,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “Norma Curtis is an inspiration with her commitment to preserving the historical heritage in Kleinburg and dedication to our community. It is civic volunteerism like this that helps strengthen and improve the quality of life in the City of Vaughan.”
A fifth-generation Vaughan resident, Ms. Curtis was raised in Kleinburg and has been actively involved in the community.
She has volunteered for numerous community organizations and events, such as Binder Twine Festival, Kleinburg-Nobleton United Church, KARA Open Spaces and the Kline House.
Ms. Curtis is a strong advocate for preserving the community’s history and she maintains an independent collection of historical items that she shares with other community members.
“Norma’s active role in the community is greatly valued and sets a positive example for others by inspiring them to make a difference,” said Ward 1 Councillor Marilyn Iafrate, who nominated Ms. Curtis for the award. “The breadth of her work and dedication to the Kleinburg community exemplifies the true meaning of a civic hero.”
The Civic Hero Award is presented annually to one resident from each of the five local wards of Vaughan. The awards recognize outstanding achievement and individual contributions to the community.
