Updated: Monday, Jan. 18

As part of the disciplined, responsible and measured approach to COVID-19, the City of Vaughan is closing its outdoor skating rinks, toboggan hill and dog park effective Friday, Jan. 15  in response to rising cases of the virus.

This latest precautionary decision impacts the following amenities:

The skating rinks at
  • Chancellor Community Centre
  • Dufferin Clark Community Centre
  • Father E. Bulfon Community Centre
  • Garnet A. Williams Community Centre
  • Vellore Village Community Centre
The toboggan hill at
  • North Maple Regional Park
The dog park at
  • 299 Racco Parkway
Most facilities – including Vaughan City Hall and the Joint Operations Centre – remain closed until June 2021 at the earliest.

This announcement comes following the Province of Ontario’s recent stay-at-home order and declaration of a second provincial emergency under s 7.0.1 (1) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMPCA). Read the COVID-19 Service Updates for more information.

The Province of Ontario declared a second state of emergency in effect as of Jan. 13 at 12:01 a.m.

The Province's COVID-19 Framework (colour-coded zones) is paused during this time.

Effective Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021at 12:01 a.m., the Province issued a stay-at-home order requiring everyone to remain at home with exceptions for essential purposes, such as going to the grocery store or pharmacy, accessing health care services, for exercise or for essential work.
Gathering limits:
  • No indoor organized public events and social gatherings, except with members of the same household; individuals who live alone, including seniors, may consider having exclusive, close contact with another household to help reduce the negative impacts of social isolation.
  • Gathering limit for outdoor organized public events and social gatherings is limited to five people outdoors with limited exceptions. This is consistent with the rules during the lockdown during the first wave of COVID-19 in spring 2020 and will allow individuals and families to enjoy time outdoors safely.
  • Gathering limit for religious services, rites or ceremonies, including wedding ceremonies and funeral services, is limited to the following with compliance to mask rules:
    • 10 people indoors with physical distancing in place
    • 10 people outdoors with physical distancing in place
  • Virtual and drive-in wedding services, funeral services and religious services, rites or ceremonies are permitted; vehicles must be positioned at least two metres from other vehicles and each person attending must remain in their vehicles (restroom and health and safety exceptions may apply)

Stores and shopping:

  • All non-essential retail stores, including hardware stores, alcohol retailers, and those offering curbside pickup or delivery, must open no earlier than 7 a.m. and close no later than 8 p.m. The restricted hours of operation do not apply to stores that primarily sell food, pharmacies, gas stations, convenience stores, and restaurants for takeout or delivery.
  • Individuals are required to wear a mask or face covering in the indoor areas of businesses or organizations that are open. Wearing a mask or face covering is now recommended outdoors when you can't physically distance more than two metres.

What this means for York Region businesses:

  • Worker protections, such as personal protective equipment (PPE) including masks and eye protection, are required where patrons without face coverings are within two metres of workers (indoors and in the absence of a Plexiglas or some other impermeable barrier).
  • Non-essential travel from areas of high transmission to areas of low transmission should be avoided
  • Businesses or places that are open shall ensure that equipment, washrooms, locker rooms, change rooms and showers that are accessible to the public are cleaned and disinfected as frequently as is necessary to maintain a sanitary condition.
  • Non-essential construction is further restricted, including below-grade construction, exempting survey.
  • Guidance and resources to help businesses operate more safely during COVID-19 are available at Ontario.ca/covidsafety and york.ca/preventcovid19atwork.

Visit york.ca/COVID19 for more information.
