 Voting Day for the next Municipal Election is Monday, Oct. 24, 2022. 


Filing a Nomination

Nominations for office on Vaughan Council or a School Board will be accepted by appointment only, in-person at the Office of the City Clerk, Vaughan City Hall, 2141 Major Mackenzie Dr., Vaughan. Appointments are one hour in duration and may be scheduled during regular business hours, 8:30 a.m.to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, between Monday, May 2 and Thursday, August 18. No appointments are required for nominations on Nomination Day, Friday, August 19, and will be accepted on a drop-in basis between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

  • NOTE: All City facilities are cashless. However, payments in cash (exact amounts encouraged) will be accepted at Vaughan City Hall as part of the candidate nomination process, which runs from May 2 until August 19, 2022, for the 2022 Municipal Election.

To file a nomination, you must provide:

  1. Form 1 - Nomination Paper (English) / Formulaire 1 - Déclaration de candidature (Français);
  2. A minimum of 25 signed declarations on Form 2 - Endorsement of Nomination (English) / Formulaire 2 - Appui à une candidature (Français) (Vaughan Council candidates only);
  3. Declaration of Qualifications (VC6, VC7 or VC7F depending on office);
  4. VC13 - Contribution Rebate Program Participation if enrolling in the program (Vaughan Council candidates only);
  5. VC18 - Penalty Notice;
  6. Identification, including name, qualifying Vaughan address and signature; and
  7. Nomination filing fee, $100 for Councillor or Trustee, $200 for Mayor.
Original signatures are required for all forms filed with Election Services. Agents who file on behalf of a candidate must provide all of the above, and their own identification.

Candidate Information Session

A candidate information session hosted by the City of Vaughan and the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) was held at Vaughan City Hall and online on Thursday, April 21. Attendees learned about the candidate nomination process to become a Member of Vaughan Council or a School Board Trustee and information was shared about obligations, actions and responsibilities throughout the election.

Candidate Eligibility

Vaughan Council eligibility

To run for Mayor, Local and Regional Councillor, Ward Councillor or School Board Trustee for the City of Vaughan, on the day the nomination is filed, a person must be:

  • a Canadian citizen.
  • at least 18 years of age or older.
  • a resident of the city of Vaughan, or an owner or tenant of property in the city of Vaughan, or the spouse of an owner or tenant of property in the city of Vaughan.
  • not otherwise disqualified from holding municipal office under any law.

Ineligible for office on Vaughan Council

The following people are disqualified from being elected to office on Vaughan Council:

  • Any person who is not eligible to vote in the city of Vaughan
  • An employee of the city of Vaughan who has not taken an unpaid leave of absence or resigned
  • A judge of any court
  • A Member of Parliament, a Member of Provincial Parliament or a senator
  • An inmate serving a sentence in a penal or correctional institution
  • A candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement or exceeded the prescribed spending limit(s) in the last Municipal Election

School Board Trustee eligibility

To run for school board trustee with the York Region District School Board (YRDSB), York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB), Conseil scolaire Viamonde, or Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir, a person must be:

  • a Canadian citizen.
  • at least 18 years of age or older.
  • a resident in the area of jurisdiction of the board.
  • eligible to vote for the school board.
  • not otherwise disqualified from holding office on a school board under any law.

Ineligible for office on a School Board

The following people are disqualified from being elected as a school board trustee:

  • Any person who is not eligible to vote in the school board election
  • An employee of a school board or a municipal official who has not taken an unpaid leave of absence or resigned
  • A judge of any court
  • A Member of Parliament, a Member of Provincial Parliament or a senator
  • An inmate serving a sentence in a penal or correctional institution
  • A candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement or exceeded the prescribed spending limit(s) in the last school board election
