Review of Property-Related By-laws

In line with the City of Vaughan (COV) By-law Strategy, the By-law and Compliance, Licensing and Permit Services department (BCLPS) is reviewing City regulation with respect to Fences, Long Grass and Weeds, Property Standards, Road Allowance, Vacant Properties and related matters, to be brought before Council in 2022.

How to get involved

Residents are invited to participate in the review of these by-laws by providing commentary on the property related by-laws under review. Comments received will be considered in the amendment and/or development of regulations.

For consideration

You are invited to share your input on how to improve regulations in the following areas, such as with respect to the following questions:

Fences

  • What issues have you noticed with existing by-laws with respect to this area?
  • Which are not being addressed by our by-laws?
  • What should the fence height limit(s) be in Vaughan?
  • How should fence height measurement take grading into account?
  • What industry standards should our by-law address?

Long Grass and Weeds

  • What issues have you noticed with existing by-laws with respect to this area?
  • Which are not being addressed by our by-laws?
  • What should the grass height limit(s) be? Should limits be different for lots based on occupancy?
  • How should agricultural lands be addressed?

Property Standards and Vacant Properties

Property Standards by-laws address the maintenance and conditions of properties.

  • What issues have you noticed with existing by-laws with respect to this area?
  • Which are not being addressed by our by-laws?
  • Are vacant properties a big issue in Vaughan?
  • Should vacant lots be treated differently than occupied lots?

Road Allowance

A property owner’s private property line ends just before the external water shut off valve, at which point anything after that is considered "road allowance", such as a partial section of a property owner’s driveway and front lawn, the sidewalk, the small portion of driveway abutting the street, the street, and the same on the opposite side of the road. Road allowance is under the jurisdiction of the City.

  • What issues have you noticed with existing by-laws with respect to this area?
  • Which are not being addressed by our by-laws?
  • How should removal be addressed?
  • Would a roadway occupancy permit system be helpful for effective enforcement?
  • Given your experience, do you think there is a need to address roadside sales, sidewalk patios, portrait artists and/or buskers?
