public works department -
water/wastewater division

For Water Related Emergencies, please contact the Public Works Department at: (905) 832-8562

Description of Services:

This division is made up of two sections: Water and Wastewater & Drainage

Services:

Water Section

The Water section maintains and repairs the network of watermains within the City, providing safe drinkable water to residential and commercial units. Vaughan residents and businesses consume over 2 million cubic metres of water a month. This rises to over 4 million cubic metres a month during the summer months.

The water which we consume is supplied from Lake Ontario and is treated by The City of Toronto. It travels over 22 kms and is pumped 4 to 8 times before it reaches the consumer. The Kleinburg area is serviced by a well, which is operated by the Region of York.

Water samples are taken on a regular basis throughout the City to ensure the highest water quality. Click here for the City of Vaughan Water Quality Information.

Services Provided:

  • monitor & repair the City’s network of watermains
  • regular flushing of watermains
  • regular sampling and testing of water quality
  • repair & install water meters
  • temporary building water service
  • temporary hydrant usage for special projects

Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: There is a bad odour in my water.
Answer: In the summer months, the majority of odour problems are caused by an increase of algae in Lake Ontario. Although it may have a musty odour, the water has been treated and is safe to use.
Question: My hot water appears rusty or has white particles in it.
Answer: This is often caused by sediment accumulating in your hot water tank. Flushing the tank should solve the problem. Please contact your service provider or plumber for assistance or follow the instructions on your tank.

Wastewater & Drainage Section

The Wastewater & Drainage section is responsible to monitor and maintain infrastructure for the collection of wastewater and to control the environmental impact of our storm management system.

Sewage generated by Vaughan flows through over 45 kms of sewers before it reaches the Duffin Creek treatment plant located just east of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. Sewage is treated and released back into Lake Ontario. The Kleinburg area is serviced by a treatment plant operated by the Region of York.

Liquids such as engine oil, paint, and cooking oil, contaminate and clog sewers creating expensive maintenance costs and should never be poured down drains. Click Here for information on how to properly dispose of household hazardous waste items at various locations operated by the Region of York.

Services Provided:

  • clean-up of spills of hazardous materials
  • investigate sewer back-ups
  • investigate odours from drains
  • yellowfish road program

Frequently Asked Questions:

Question:

There is a bad odour coming from my floor drain, sink drain, etc.

Answer:

Often these odours are caused because the trap in the drainage system is dry. Try pouring some water into the drain. If the problem persists, please call our direct line.
