Who are we?
Heritage Vaughan, the City of Vaughan’s
Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC), is
a committee of community volunteers appointed by Council to advise
on heritage matters. The Committee reviews requests for designation
under the Ontario Heritage Act, and assists in preserving heritage
resources throughout the City.
Heritage Vaughan’s Mission Statement
Heritage Vaughan is committed to the
conservation, protection and promotion of Vaughan’s built heritage,
its natural environment and its evolving cultural history, including
current and past archival, architectural and archaeological artifacts.
What is Heritage Designation?
Properties considered to be of architectural
and/or historical significance within the Municipality may be designated
under the Ontario Heritage Act. Designation recognizes the importance
of the property as a heritage resource within our community.
Properties
designated within the City of Vaughan are marked by a bronze
plaque and owners of these properties are eligible for grants and
low-interest loans to offset restoration costs. To date, the City
has designated 49 individual properties and one district, the Thornhill
Heritage Conservation District. Two property designations are pending.
What is the Thornhill Heritage
Conservation District?
An area within the Old Village of Thornhill
was designated as a Heritage Conservation District in 1983. A District
Designation under the Ontario Heritage Act recognizes both natural
and built heritage features of a community and consideration is
given to the character of the area when planning new development.
Is there any funding to assist
with the restoration of Designated Heritage Properties?
Owners of properties designated under
the Ontario Heritage Act are eligible for grants and low-interest
loans to offset the costs of restoration. The Designated Property
Subsidy and the Community Heritage Fund are administered by the
Municipality.
