Council renews commitment to historic city-building document

During a special signing ceremony at the 2018-2022 Term of Council inauguration, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council unanimously endorsed the Vaughan Accord – a 12-point document that defines the principles of public service and affirms a promise of responsible, co-operative and effective governance.

The Accord is a transformational initiative that was first introduced by Mayor Bevilacqua in 2010. This marks the third occasion the Accord was unanimously endorsed by Council. The Accord calls on Vaughan’s elected representatives to work together constructively and always in the interest of the entire community.

The Accord has been celebrated as a catalyst, responsible for shaping Vaughan’s positive image, guiding Council decisions and helping ensure key accomplishments are achieved, including: the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre – the emerging downtown – rising from the ground; the cranes towering over the site of the future Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital; and the opening of Phase One of the new 900-acre North Maple Regional Park – which will be larger than New York City’s Central Park.

By adhering to the values upon which the Accord has been built – mutual respect, dedication, integrity and accountability – Council, staff and the community will forge ahead with building a world-class city.

QUOTE

“Since 2010, our efforts have been enshrined in the Vaughan Accord – a pledge that commits all Members of Council to serve in a manner that reflects a positive image of the City and instills civic pride. It is only fitting that we come together once again to reaffirm our commitment to the Accord during the 2018-2022 Term of Council inauguration. An inaugural is a jubilant time. It is also a reminder of the heavy weight of responsibility that comes with holding public office. You would be hard-pressed to find any city in Canada more determined to make respect, transparency and accountability a cornerstone of their efforts than what we have undertaken to implement over the past eight years. Maintaining faith in public institutions has been a hallmark of our efforts. Today, we all see a Vaughan that is praised as a nationally acclaimed leader in city-building. According to the 2018 Citizen Satisfaction Survey, 97 per cent of residents said they are happy with their quality of life here in our community. This feedback is encouraging, but we know there is more work to be done. The best is yet to come!”
- Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua
