Leaf and Yard - Set Out Requirements
Set your leaf and yard material out in accordance to the City's leaf and yard program requirements. Fines may be issued for non compliance.


Collection day:
Leaf and yard waste material is collected seasonally, typically between April and November. Collection occurs weekly in the Spring (April - May) and Fall (October - November). During the Summer (June, July and August), leaf and yard collection is every other week.

2012 Schedule:

Summer 2012 ( Tuesday, June 5 to Friday, October 5):
Collected EVERY OTHER WEEK on your regular collection day

Fall 2012 (Tuesday, October 9 to Friday November 30):
Collected WEEKLY on your regular collection day

Please refer to the current 'Collection Calendar' to see if your leaf and yard waste material is collected during the blue week or the yellow week and follow the corresponding colour throughout the summer months.

Should you hire a company for lawn services, please advise them of these requirements. Fines may be issued for non compliance.

Collection time:
Place your waste at the curbside no earlier than 6:00 p.m. the night before collection and no later than 7:00 a.m. the day of collection. The time of collection in your area may change at any time, without notice.

Placement of materials:

For easy identificaiton for the contractor, please have clear separation for each waste stream (i.e: leaf and yard, recycling etc.)

Ensure all materials placed out for collection are in accordance with the City's set out requirements.

Please place your collectible materials at the curbside for collection. Do not place collectible materials on the road, as it may pose a hazard to vehicular traffic.

Keep waste materials separate from your neighbours.


Container type:

  Acceptable Containers:
    Kraft paper bags designed for leaf and yard waste material
   

Designated open top rigid containers such as a bushel basket or a regulation sized garbage container marked "Leaf and Yard Waste"

   
  Unacceptable Containers:
    Plastic bags
    Cardboard boxes
    Oversized rigid containers
    Green bins
   

Recycling boxes

Permitted weight:
The total weight of one container and contents and/or individual bundles shall not exceed 20.5 kgs (45 lbs).

Accepted leaf and yard material:

Garden refuse, grass, plant material and leaves.

All tree and shrub cuttings MUST be bundled and not heavier than 20.5 kgs. (45 lbs.).

Tree and shrub cuttings or other similar material, provided that they do not exceed 1.5 m. (5 ft.) in length and are not greater than 10 cm. (4 in.) in diameter.

Not accepted leaf and yard waste material:

Any leaf and yard material set out in container other than in an acceptable container, as noted above.

Any containerbundle weighing more than 20.5 kgs. (45 lbs.).

Branches, twigs and cuttings that are not tied in secure bundles.

Branches, twigs and cuttings that are longer than 1.5 m. (5 ft.) and/or exceeding 10 c.m. (4 in.) in diameter.

Soil and/or Sod are not collected in the Leaf and Yard Program, or the General Waste Stream. Contact the Yard Waste Composting Facility, the Waste Disposal & Transfer Site(s) or the York Region for options.


Do not contaminate Leaf and Yard material with household waste or other non-leaf and yard waste material, such as:






Kitchen and food waste
Rocks and stones
Stumps and root balls
Animal droppings
Fruits and vegetables
Tree branches or brush larger than 10 cm. (4 in.) in diameter and 1.5 m. (5 ft.) long.

Grasscycling and backyard composting:
Residents may also further manage onsite leaf and yard waste through backyard composting or grasscycling. Grasscycling is a process of recycling grass clippings by leaving them on your lawn to decompose naturally.

directly to the leaf and yard waste Composting Facility.
