The following is a list of frequently asked questions for candidates for the 2018 Municipal Election. This page is routinely updated, so please check back regularly for new information.
Agent Appointment

What is an agent?
An agent is a person or persons appointed by the candidate to act on their behalf in an official capacity. This individual is authorized to receive information and conduct business with the Office of the City Clerk in the name of the candidate to whom they have been appointed.

How do I appoint agents?
To appoint one or more agents, a candidate and their agents must complete the Agent Appointment Form (available from the Candidate Access Portal) and file it with the Office of the City Clerk. If you wish to appoint additional agents, complete a new form and file it with the office.
Campaigning

Am I allowed to advertise on bus shelters?
Yes. Bus shelter advertising is not subject to the City of Vaughan's Sign By-law, and may be posted after you have filed your nomination and opened a campaign account. Candidates should be mindful of their obligations in respect of section 88.3 of the
Municipal Elections Act, 1996
when conducting any form of campaign advertising.

Am I allowed to advertise in newspapers or broadcast media?
Yes. Newspaper and broadcast media advertisements may be placed after you have filed your nomination and opened a campaign account. Candidates should be mindful of their obligations in respect of section 88.3 of the
Municipal Elections Act, 1996
when conducting any form of campaign advertising.

Scrutineers

What is a scrutineer?
You may appoint a scrutineer for each tabulator in a voting place. You do not have to appoint that many scrutineers, or any scrutineers at all. If you have appointed one scrutineer for each tabulator, one scrutineer must leave while you are in the voting place. Scrutineers may observe but they are not allowed to interfere with voters, attempt to influence how they vote, or ask a voter how they voted.

Who can I appoint as a scrutineer?
There are no general restrictions on who you can appoint as a scrutineer (for example, a scrutineer can be any age and does not have to be a citizen). However, an acclaimed candidate cannot be appointed as a scrutineer for another candidate.

How do I appoint a scrutineer?
Scrutineers must be appointed in writing, using the Scrutineer Appointment Form available from the Candidate Access Portal. Scrutineers are be required to show proof of his or her appointment to election officials when they attend the voting location and take an Oath of Secrecy.
Ward Boundary Maps

Where can I access ward boundary maps?
Ward boundary maps relevant to your campaign may be found in the document database on the candidate access portal. Simply login to your account, and scroll through the list of documents for a city-wide ward boundary map, and maps of the wards relevant to the office you are running for.

Will polling subdivision maps be made available?
Yes, additional ward boundary maps with polling subdivisions and voting places will be made available by the end of July. These new maps will be made available on the candidate access portal for download by candidates.
